Seekers Dinner

Claude and Eustace Wooster and Dog-Face (Lord Rainsby), after the trying experience of losing their offerings for their initiation into the Seekers Club at the hands of Bertie Wooster [find in Bertie's archives or Sir Roderick's memoirs on "Loonies I Have Lunched With: Too Many Cats"] bucked up with some bracers at a pub and redoubled their efforts. Those efforts were rewarded, when they and two other lads, Chump, Lord Chummersleigh and Fenton Bagshott-Smythe became the newest Seekers at the annual dinner. In keeping with tradition, they each brought the item they pinched (a banjolele, a perambulator [baby carriage], a picnic basket, a Yorkshire Terrier, and a pair of turtledoves). They had, with some effort, snatched the above on Bond Street, in a museum, in a park, at the train station, and at the zoo.

They also brought a lucky charm each credited with the successful theft ( a four-leaf clover, a horseshoe, a gold mascot or charm in the shape of a monkey, a rabbit's foot, and a lucky sixpence). Finally, each came with a different hat (a straw boater, a panama, a pith helmet, a tyrolean hat, and a top hat).

From the following 9 clues, can you match each new Seeker with what and from where he pinched, his lucky charm, and the hat each wore to the annual dinner?

[Note: for the purposes of the clues, a "thing" or "item" can be a thing, animal or person]

Clues

  1. Fenton and one of the Wooster twins pinched the animals.
  2. Of the two lads who picked up a container of some kind, someone, not Claude, took out the "contents" before pinching, but Dog-Face did not think that was necessary, and actually enjoyed the contents at a late lunch when he was safely away from the scene of the crime.
  3. The five new seekers were Chump, the banjolele thief, the lad who pinched something from the train station, the owner of the horseshoe, and the lad who stunned all in a top hat at the dinner.
  4. Claude wore the Tyrolean hat; he was not the one who picked the four leaf clover for luck. Eustace had a pith helmet and did not carry a lucky sixpence.
  5. The lad who pinched something in the park carried a monkey as his luck mascot while the lad who swiped something at the zoo found a four leaf clover in front of the monkey cage.
  6. Eustace picked up his item on Bond Street; he was not the owner of the rabbit's foot and he did not pinch the banjolele.
  7. The lad who found his prize at the museum (not Claude) did not wear a boater or panama, nor did he carry a lucky sixpence.
  8. The seeker in the panama hat pinched the pair of turtledoves.
  9. Claude and Eustace refused to go to the zoo after a painful episode involving Cousin Thomas and a lion cub.

Use an X when you are sure that two fields do not match. Use a dot when you are sure that two fields do match. Click once to place an X. Click a second time to place a dot. Click a third time to clear the box.

Select marker color by clicking the colored radio buttons. You can use colored marks to indicate which clue provided a value, or to indicate a guess that might not be correct, or just because you like solving puzzles in teal.

Use the "Save" button to save a puzzle in progress. Use the "Load" button to reload the puzzle. This feature uses cookies - fear not, we aren't tracking you or stealing credit card numbers (we couldn't, even if we wanted to.) At the moment, only one puzzle may be saved at a time on each computer (unless using different browsers or accounts). There is no warning if you save over another puzzle, and no undo!

Use the "Current Solution Window" button to parse the grid for your solution. This feature simply looks for dots in the top set of rows and creates a list that you can copy and paste into your email for submission.

If you want to clear the grid and start over, just refresh the page. Note that there is a bug in IE6 (and possibly other browsers), so that if a color other than the default is selected, that color may appear to be selected after the reload, but the actual color used will be the default.
