Peddlers and Steerers

You've heard of the Drones Club's Darts Competition, Fat Uncle Sweeps, and Golf Tournament, but the dreadful tale of the Drones' Double-Decker Bicycle Race has remained sealed in the club vault until now. It was the sight of one of London's famous double-decker buses going 'round Piccadilly Circus that inspired the concept of this race. The wounds have finally healed between the principal Peddlers (i.e. Oofy Prosser, Pongo Twistleton-Twistleton, Ronnie Fish, Stilton Cheesewright and Tuppy Glossop), and the infamous "Five B Gang" of Steerers (Barmy, Bertie, Boko, Bingo, & Biffy) riding piggy-back on the shoulders of the Peddlers and steering with their feet. The story can at last be told, as a warning to future generations. Once the foul idea of two men riding one velocipede was hatched, a simple canvass of the membership turned up five suitable steeds, all sturdy British Raleigh two-wheelers, a pristine White one, one cheery Pink, a snazzy Silver one, a weirdly Purple one, and finally a sunshine Yellow one.

So it was that one fine August evening, the contestants met at the starting post at Piccadilly. They were required to make 3 circuits around the fountain with the statue of Eros, pausing before each circuit to imbibe one May Queen (said cocktail to be split between the Peddler and the Steerer with 2 soda straws). The five brave teams completed the course, all right, then were gathered up by the forces of the London Police and quite properly jugged for the night prior to coming up before the magistrate in the a.m. and being fined fivers all 'round for disturbing the peace and fivers all 'round, yet again, for creating a public nuisance.

Can you determine, from these four little clues, who teamed up with whom, what color bikes they rode, and in what order they finished?

Clues

  1. At the starting gate appeared the five teams: Bingo & his Peddler, the White Bike team, Pongo & his Steerer, the team that would finish in fourth place, and Boko atop the shoulders of his teammate.
  2. Barmy & his Peddler finished one behind the White Bike (which did not bear Tuppy), but one ahead of Ronnie Fish.
  3. Bertie wore a cheerful pink necktie to match the bike he steered.
  4. Boko (who refused to ride the Silver bike on the grounds that it was unlucky), finished one behind the bike peddled by Stilton, who in turn finished one behind the Yellow bike.

Solving Tips

Use an X when you are sure that two fields do not match. Use a dot when you are sure that two fields do match. Click once to place an X. Click a second time to place a dot. Click a third time to clear the box.

Select marker color by clicking the colored radio buttons. You can use colored marks to indicate which clue provided a value, or to indicate a guess that might not be correct, or just because you like solving puzzles in teal.

Use the "Save" button to save a puzzle in progress. Use the "Load" button to reload the puzzle. This feature uses cookies - fear not, we aren't tracking you or stealing credit card numbers (we couldn't, even if we wanted to.) At the moment, only one puzzle may be saved at a time on each computer (unless using different browsers or accounts). There is no warning if you save over another puzzle, and no undo!

Use the "Current Solution Window" button to parse the grid for your solution. This feature simply looks for dots in the top set of rows and creates a list that you can copy and paste into your email for submission.

If you want to clear the grid and start over, just refresh the page. Note that there is a bug in IE6 (and possibly other browsers), so that if a color other than the default is selected, that color may appear to be selected after the reload, but the actual color used will be the default.
