Story

Bingo Little in love

Those who know Richard "Bingo" Little recognize him as a sportsman to his fingertips. He cherishes nothing, his fellow Drones know, more dearly than a tip straight from the horse's mouth--nothing, that is, except the sweet smile of some coquette.

These competing passions collided during Goodwood last year. Bingo set out determined to apply his infallible new science of handicapping, certain of gaining untold riches and leaving the bookies licking their wounds. His resolve didn't survive the first race, however, when either Angela, Bettina, Cornelia, Dahlia, Edina, or Fiona (he can no longer recall just which) suggested he choose her favorite horse. Each of these girls recommended a choice--Harlot's Sorrow, Indomitable, Javanese, Kleaver, Latent Tensions, or Motivational--for each of the first six races, and Bingo's money quickly followed.

Surprisingly, Bingo finished the day ahead, despite the unorthodox method of distributing his funds. Three winning bets more than compensated for his losses on the remaining three races.

After the races, he sat with a glass at his side attempting to recreate the curious events of the day. From these eight clues, can you help him remember which girl suggested which horse in each race, and whether each bet was a winner or a loser?

Clues

  1. The first race was one of the three Bingo won; the three losing bets were not three in a row.
  2. The last win was Fiona's favorite.
  3. Bingo placed consecutive bets on Latent Tensions, then the horse Bettina suggested, and then a winner.
  4. Bingo lost the money he bet on Kleaver.
  5. Indomitable was not Bettina's suggestion.
  6. In consecutive races, Bingo bet on the horse Cornelia suggested, then on Motivational, and then on a nag that had to show a burst of speed at the end to avoid becoming mixed up in the following race.
  7. Fiona did not favor the fortunes of Javanese.
  8. Flush with his winnings on the bet that Dahlia suggested, Bingo immediately risked vast sums on Indomitable and then on the apple of Angela's eye.

Use an X when you are sure that two fields do not match. Use a dot when you are sure that two fields do match. Click once to place an X. Click a second time to place a dot. Click a third time to clear the box.

Select marker color by clicking the colored radio buttons. You can use colored marks to indicate which clue provided a value, or to indicate a guess that might not be correct, or just because you like solving puzzles in teal.

Use the "Save" button to save a puzzle in progress. Use the "Load" button to reload the puzzle. This feature uses cookies - fear not, we aren't tracking you or stealing credit card numbers (we couldn't, even if we wanted to.) At the moment, only one puzzle may be saved at a time on each computer (unless using different browsers or accounts). There is no warning if you save over another puzzle, and no undo!

Use the "Current Solution Window" button to parse the grid for your solution. This feature simply looks for dots in the top set of rows and creates a list that you can copy and paste into your email for submission.

If you want to clear the grid and start over, just refresh the page. Note that there is a bug in IE6 (and possibly other browsers), so that if a color other than the default is selected, that color may appear to be selected after the reload, but the actual color used will be the default.
